Another new entry

(Kylie: one half of ‘Especially for you’: a pair of paintings. Part of ‘Another new entry’. Acrylic on canvas, by Helen Dryden, 2014.)

My new exhibition of paintings ‘Another new entry’ will open on May 28th 2014, 5-8pm, at Jordan’s Solicitors in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. It’s part of the bi-monthly Artwalk Wakefield taking place that evening, where venues across the city host art exhibitions and open their doors to the public for the evening.

The work will remain at Jordan’s until 30th July, and can be viewed by appointment. Call 01924 387110.

The nearest train station is Wakefield Westgate, and it’s a 5 minute walk.

‘Another new entry’ is a selection of paintings of the pop icons I grew up with. Whilst painting I was inspired by fan art, folk art, teenage crushes, hysteria and nostalgia. These singers, musicians and dancers had images created by the music industry, served up to us in Smash Hits and Top of the Pops. I couldn’t wait for the latest posters, song lyrics, instructions on who to admire. Strange poses, assumed characters and meaningless gestures: we lapped them up, hoping to find something that would tell us more about the adults we were yet to become.

Images of the paintings are available in the ‘galleries’ section:
