I luuuurve Instagram, it’s my most favourite way to see new art as it’s made, fresh from the studio of the artists who make it.
I decided to make a list of seven of the artists (mainly painters) I like to follow on Instagram – I follow 1173 people right now, so to make my choice I picked people who have impressed me lots over the last couple of weeks, but also have been doing so for several months now. It’s not a definitive list, but if you are new to Instagram and are looking for a good place to start, then these are some that I love, and perhaps you will too!
In no particular order:
Coulorful, crazy, cute and weird. The posts are in Japanese, but the pictures speak for themselves anyway.
Ethreal, creepy, at times humorous. Reminds me a little of Elizabeth Peyton.
Leeds art wonder Emily Cullen is ‘Thunder Fries’ – when she’s not putting on art shows, she’s setting up feminist art happenings, and creating her own paintings and drawings too, as well as running a bar. Wow!
Kitsch, twisted, cute, turning a feminine, girly aesthetic into something more radical. Makes me think of Angela Carter books and kawaii dolls.
Gill Button, paints portraits of fashionable beauties. At times inky and watery like Marlene Dumas, at other times fleshy and bold like Chantal Joffe.
Whimsical, naiive style illustrations in pastel shades and pencil crayons, showing everyday scenes from life in Japan, and childlike drawings from the imagination.
I know absolutely nothing about this person, as they have only posted some beautifully atmospheric paintings of trees over the last 6 months. That’s all I can tell you!
So, apart from no.7 who I know nothing about, I seem to have chosen female artists for my list, though this wasn’t deliberate. I follow men as well, of course! I guess that in the interests of fairness I ought to do another post soon about 7 male Instagrammers I follow. —————————————————
