Put a bird on it

I have just finished another large painting which I’m calling ‘Put a Bird on it’ (Portlandia fans will know what I’m on about here).

There are several gulls in the painting, which combines abstraction and figuration. There are a few smileys in there too. My aim with the painting is to create happiness and a low level sort of panic that the birds are a bit too close, but predominantly a nervous euphoria.

I used stencils cut from card for the smaller smileys with star shaped eyes, and for the heart shapes. I drew through the stencil in pencil, and then painted the shapes by hand, rather than the other possible stencil technique where the stencil is used a as painting mask.
